tips
Here are some tips to help make sewing easier, especially if your machine is not working with you.
⢠Use startie-stoppiesâsmall folded scraps of fabric (a.k.a. leaders and enders, bunny tails, thread catchers, and so on)âto begin and end your sewing. First, sew onto a startie; and then, without cutting the threads, stitch off the startie and begin chain piecing. This will hold the threads and prevent thread nests or fabric from being pulled down into the feed dogs. At the end of chain piecing, sew onto another startie-stoppie and cut the work off the back. This will be the startie for the next sewn set. Keep using these startie-stoppies so that bobbins last longer, work stays more organized, the presser foot is protected from the feed dogs, and many other benefits.
⢠If your machine does not feed the pieces in easily, with needle-down, raise the presser foot and place the edge of the teardrop near the needle.
⢠Take the first two or three stitches slowly to sew through the multiple layers smoothly.
⢠When chain piecing these together, remember to clip the chain stitches close to the wide-angled end.
⢠If the machine is pushing the fabric and making a narrower seam at the end, consider moving the needle to the right and using a regular foot. This will get all the feed dogs working with the project rather than fighting the multiple layers.
⢠If you do not want to move the needle and the fabric is still being drawn into the feed dogs, put a single-hole throat plate on the machine. Be sure to have the needle in the center position! Make a note that you are using this plate, otherwise needles will be broken. Can you guess how I know this one?
